View this post on Instagram Beautiful sunset coral shot by @alexkyddphoto 💙 Did you know that about 1/4 of coral reefs are already considered damaged beyond repair, while another 2/3 are severely threatened? This loss of coral reefs is a devastating global issue as coral reefs play a very important role in marine ecosystems. While they only cover about 1% of the ocean floor they are home to about 25% of all marine life, meaning they are responsible for the highest marine biodiversity in the oceans. They act as natural breakwaters that help protect shoreline communities, coastal cities and beaches from powerful waves and storms. They drive tourism in so many countries around the world, providing millions of jobs and billions of dollars in incomes. Some ways we can help protect coral reefs: 1. Switch to a plant-based diet 2. Reduce your plastic and carbon footprint 3. Use a reef safe sunscreen like @sunbutterskincare 4. Make sure to only take photos and look but don’t touch coral structures 5. When travel is open again, go see your favourite coral reefs and keep eco tourism alive so they will be protected! A post shared by Gen Blue Education (@genblueau) on Jul 19, 2020 at 7:28pm PDT
